June 26, 2008

On Thursday, June 26, 2008, Luke celebrated the completion of his first year on Earth. How can it be that he is already 1? Where did my little Lukey-Luke go? But I digress…
This entry is not to ponder the meaning of life, but to share the birthday celebration with you. It was a small affair, originally just John, Jack, Luke and me, then Stephanie (the neighbor) and her mom and great aunt stopped by to enjoy the lecker (yummy) himbeere birthday tart. (The tart is not a traditional German thing – it was just the best looking dessert at the Heller Café, a famous bakery in Oberursel, outside Frankfurt. And, since my best friend from college is not only German, but sports the last name of Heller, I felt this was the place to go for the birthday sweeties!)

Jack was front and center at the celebration, blew out the candle for Luke, then proceeded to pick a few raspberries off the tart to test himself…a bit mortifying in front of our new German friends.

Jack is also sporting a German flag tattoo in the pics, in celebration of Germany’s big fuβball victory over Turkey in the semi-finals. Next, we will be playing in the European finals Sunday night. We’re really enjoying the fuβball here. I asked Jack the other day if he was a California boy or a German boy and he told me he was a German boy. That was fast. J

Luke received some ADORABLE clothes and books from his grandparents in Texas, as well as a few Fisher Price toys from Mom, Dad and Big Bro. The ride-on zebra was a hit with both the boys, as you can see.

Thanks to everyone for the gifts and birthday wishes, especially the things for Jack – everyone is so thoughtful to remember him also on Luke’s birthday. We wish you could have been here to celebrate with us….

Much love.
