Geburtstag kommt

June 17, 2008

Both John and Luke have birthdays quickly approaching, John on the 21st and Luke on the 26th. As some of you remember, we had a dilemma about choosing Luke’s birth date because our doctor suggested we have the C-section on the 21st. This being John’s birthday, we were torn about whether we wanted to subject Luke to a lifetime of sharing his big day with his dad. Though one could argue it would make it that much more special…maybe.

The celebrations this year have me stymied. For John, the man who has everything, including his 3.0 Audi Kombi that cost more than our Porsche (yes, folks, the station wagon was pricier than the Cabriolet), the only thing he really NEEDS is something I cannot give him - the gift of language. John says he feels sorriest for Bettina, his German tutor. “Torturous,” “painful,” and “eternity” are descriptors he uses when discussing his German lessons. Though I must say, it sounds like Bettina is holding her own. Unlike my tutor, who will converse with me in English now and then, Bettina will ONLY speak in German. Poor John. Poor Bettina. Maybe for his birthday she’ll say something in English.

For Luke, this birthday is a big one – literally. Hard to believe he’s been with us for a year because we crammed about 5 years of living into these 12 months. Who’da thunk we’d be celebrating a child’s first birthday (at our age) living in Germany? (Ahh, life is full of surprises.) When Jack turned one, we threw a big party. Afterwards, we agreed it was pretty silly – he had no idea what was going on, and it interfered with his nap. Here, our idea of a big party would be having the 10 people we know over for a BBQ. And maybe 10 is pushing it.

So, I have a few more days to figure out the plans for the birthdays. Wish me luck. I just wish you were all here to celebrate it with us!!!

Here are a few pictures of Master Luke in our dining room. He has a small cut on his upper lip which he was awarded on Sunday when he misjudged one of the steps into the fireplace room. Clearly, he's all boy...with the sword and all.

See you later, Alligator!
